Year 7 National Spanish Spelling Competition – Nayonika Sujitkumar

The National Spelling Bee Competition in French, German, and Spanish took place on Friday 20th June, hosted by the Faculty of Modern & Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with Routes into Languages.

We are incredibly proud to highlight the outstanding achievement of one of our brightest stars, Nayonika Sujitkumar, who represented Hazelwick School with exceptional skill and determination. From the moment Nayonika embarked on this journey in September, she has shown remarkable dedication and an inspiring level of perseverance.

Despite experiencing natural nerves, Nayonika was nothing short of outstanding in the competition. Within the one-minute timeframe, she confidently translated and spelled 20 challenging words in Spanish. Out of 17,000 students who began this incredible journey across three languages, Nayonika proudly ranked among the top 8 nationally in Spanish – a truly extraordinary accomplishment that speaks volumes about her dedication, resilience, and intellectual brilliance.

Her performance is a testament to the immense effort she has put in, and we are excited to see what the future holds for her. Nayonika is already looking forward to participating in the Spanish Translation Bee next year in Year 8, and we have no doubt that she will continue to excel.

We also wish to extend our gratitude to the entire Year 7 cohort for their enthusiastic participation in the competition. Your involvement and encouragement have been invaluable throughout the entire process.

My Spanish Spelling Bee Experience

(by Nayonika Sujitkumar)

Participating in the Spanish Spelling Bee has given me a lot of confidence and determination. It has greatly improved my vocabulary and inspired me to always try my best. I truly enjoyed being part of this experience.

The Spelling Bee Lunch Club played a big role in my journey. It was incredibly helpful and supportive throughout my participation. When I first walked into the room, I never imagined I would make so many kind and encouraging friends. Even though many participants didn’t qualify for the later rounds, they still came to the club and continued to cheer everyone on.

Special thanks to Ms. García and Ms. Fernández, who supported and motivated me. Without both of you, I could never have come this far or achieved so much. Your support meant a lot to me.

To everyone who came to the lunch club and motivated me - thank you. You helped me push myself and work as hard as I could.

For future participants, my advice is:

don’t stress too much and think of it as a game

 - you’re just completing levels to reach the end. Work hard, give it your all, and never give up!

I’m now looking forward to the Year 8 Translation Bee. I hope it will be even more fun and challenging than the Spelling Bee. This experience has made me determined to keep improving every time.
