Child’s Play! 25 Years since MBBS: A paediatric story

There’s still time to sign up for the December BSMS lecture taking place tomorrow, Wednesday 3 December! Our speaker for this month is paediatric consultant, Dr Leonie Perera.
This talk will cover Leonie's training story, upsides and downsides of paediatrics, how Leonie's role has evolved over time, current training pathways and "hot" topics.
Dr Perera qualified from King's College London in 2000 (MBBS). She was appointed Paediatric Consultant at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital 13 years ago. Leonie works in the Children's Emergency Department and Children's High Dependency Unit / Critical Care. She is the named doctor for Queen Victoria NHS Trust (Burns/Surgical Specialities) providing training and case advice.
Live Virtual Medical Work Experience with the University of Southampton
February 2026
The University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton are offering Year 12 students living in the UK the opportunity to apply for their live virtual medical work experience programme.
Students on the programme will gain experience of operating theatres, outpatient clinics and multi-disciplinary meetings as well as the opportunity to speak with clinicians and current medical students.
The programme will be running on 17 and 18 February 2026 and again in August. Applications for the February programme open on 29 December 2025 and close on 19 January 2026 at 5pm.

King’s College London: K+ applications now open
Applications are now open for the 2025-2027 K+ programme with King's College London (KCL).
K+ is KCL's flagship widening participation programme for sixth form and college students. The two-year programme offers support and insight for young people applying to university.
Participants are organised into pathways depending on what they would like to study, including the Life Sciences & Medicine pathway.
KCL welcomes applications from current Year 12 students who live or study in either Greater London or one of their target regions which have recently expanded to include some areas of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Berkshire, Kent, Surrey and East Sussex. NHS Sussex Partnership Trust Work Experience
The NHS Sussex Partnership trust is offering students aged 14 and over in-person work experience placements in the spring half term, 16-20 February 2026. Placements are available across various teams including psychology, finance, digital, communications and physiotherapy to allow students to explore the different career pathways possible within the NHS.
Applications for the February cohort will open on 29 December 2025 and close on 12 January 2026. The application form link will be available on this webpage from 29 December.
