BSMS Outreach - November Newsletter

As the evenings draw in and the year begins to gather pace towards its close, we have a range of talks, events and opportunities for you and the young people you support. We have details of the upcoming monthly lectures and admission talks that will provide an insight into medicine and the application process, as well as the launch in association with the MSC of our national widening participation scheme BrightIdeas.

BrightIdeas

We are delighted to launch BrightIdeas, our national widening participation programme for Year 12 students across England. We would be grateful if you could share this opportunity with eligible students who may be considering a future career in medicine.

Throughout the programme, participants join us for four online sessions and a four-day, three-night summer school, in Brighton, where they'll:

  • Complete a research project
  • Meet medical students and healthcare professionals
  • Speak with volunteers about their lived experiences of various medical conditions
  • Learn clinical skills
  • Get 1:1 personal statement and interview support.

Upon completion of the programme, students may also be eligible for an adjusted offer and guaranteed interview to study medicine at BSMS.

To find out more about BrightIdeas 2027 including workshop dates, eligibility criteria and application information, visit our BrightIdeas webpage or register for our online information session.

BSMS Monthly Lectures

This week we are joined by Professor Richard McManus, Dean of BSMS as he delivers November’s monthly lecture. In December we are being joined by Dr. Katie East who will be discussing the effects of tobacco and vaping.

BSMS Outreach: Medicine, me and my journey through research to the Dean’s office

  • Date: Wednesday 4 November 2026
  • Time: 6.30 – 7.30pm (GMT)
  • Overview: Join Professor Richard McManus as he shares his career journey from frontline clinical practice to becoming an internationally recognised researcher and Dean of Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS).

Drawing on experience across medicine, research and leadership, Richard will reflect on the opportunities, challenges and key decisions that have shaped his career, offering insights for anyone considering a future in healthcare, medical research or academic leadership.

BSMS Outreach: Tobacco and nicotine products, perceptions, and policies

  • Date: Wednesday 2 December 2026
  • Time: 6.30 – 7.30pm (GMT)
  • Overview: For December's talk, we are joined by Dr Katie East. Dr East is an Associate Professor in Public Health at BSMS whose research interests primarily focus on tobacco and nicotine use, the public health implications of smoking and vaping, and policies to change use.

Many people think that the problem of smoking is solved, but this is not the case. Tobacco smoking remains a leading cause of preventable death and disease, with over 5 million adults in the UK still smoking. Tobacco control policies are the cornerstone of reducing smoking uptake and increasing smoking cessation. The nicotine landscape has also changed dramatically over the past decade with the rapid uptake of vapes, which are much less harmful than smoking and support quitting, but are not without risks. This talk will discuss the wide range of research currently being undertaken around tobacco and vaping, including policies to reduce smoking and youth vaping, and public misperceptions of vapes.
